Description

The Church of St John the Baptist is a parish church located in Burslem, Stoke on Trent. It was largely rebuilt in 1717, although it retains a 16th-century tower and a chancel that was added in 1788. The tower is constructed of coursed and squared rubble, while the rest of the church is made of brick on a stone plinth, topped with tiled roofs.

The church features a west tower with two stages, which has a very low door with chamfered jambs and a flat-arched hoodmould. Above this door is a three-light Perpendicular window, with a three-light opening to the bell chamber above. The tower is supported by angle buttresses and has an embattled parapet.

The nave consists of six bays, with the outer bays on the east and west sides featuring doorways that have moulded architraves, and a pediment above the eastern doorway. There is also an eastern doorway on the north side. The windows in the nave are round-arched, with stone springers and keys, and feature Y-tracery. Smaller windows with similar detailing are located above the doorways. The church has a moulded eaves band and a stone plinth, which may be a remnant from the 16th-century church.

The chancel slightly projects from the line of the nave and has an apsidal east end that contains a Palladian window, which is adorned with a moulded cornice and brackets supporting the sill.
