Description

Aston House is a farmhouse, now a house, dating to the late 16th or early 17th century, with later additions and alterations. The original timber frame is largely concealed behind rendered infill and a planted timber frame, although exposed at the gables which have slight overhangs supported on carved corner brackets. The building is arranged in an H-shape. It has two storeys and an attic. A central two-storey porch, now with a hipped roof, retains wooden benches supported by carved 17th-century brackets and an original nail-studded inner door within a moulded wooden surround. Late 19th-century mullioned and transomed windows with leaded lights are situated in the gables and ground and first floors, alongside a small 19th-century hip-roofed dormer in the roof slope of the hall range. A prominent red brick ridge stack in two sections is located to the right of the hall range, while an axial Grinshill stone ridge stack with triple rebated shafts, a moulded capping, and a moulded base is situated to the left. The interior was not accessible for inspection during a resurvey in March 1986, but is likely to contain features of interest.
