Description
Fowl House, located approximately 10 metres to the west of Vauxhall Farmhouse, was built around 1842. It features a squared and coursed sandstone base with gault brick above, accented by grey brick dressings. The building is designed in a Neo-Egyptian style, with a square base topped by a tall pyramid. The base is coped and has a low entrance facing south. The pyramid has dentil brick string courses and diamond-shaped openings, topped with a stone obelisk finial that has oval side openings. Some bricks originally bore inscribed mottoes, including "LIVE AND LET LIVE," "SCRAT BEFORE YOU PECK," "TRIAL BY JURY," "TEACH YOUR GRANNY," "CAN YOU SMELL," "GIVE EVERY (DOG) HIS DUE (DAY?)," and "HONESTY IS THE BEST POLICY." This Fowl House is part of a series of unique outbuildings constructed on the Tong Estate during the time of the Second George Durant, who died in 1844.
