Description

Tong Lodge is a tower that has been converted into a house. It was built in the late 18th century, with additions made in the mid-19th century. The structure is made of red brick and features slate roofs. The octagonal Gothic tower from the 18th century is partially surrounded by a later H-plan house that has gabled wings at both the front and back. The building is two storeys high.

On the entrance front, there is a gabled semi-dormer located off-centre to the left, which includes a canted oriel window. The facade has three stacks with grouped octagonal shafts. The flanking wings feature two-storey canted bays, with an off-centre first-floor canted oriel window to the right and a central four-panelled door flanked by sidelights. The garden front showcases the central octagonal tower adorned with plat bands, recessed quatrefoil panels above the first-floor windows, and a battlemented parapet with stone coping. To the right, there is a stack with two octagonal shafts and a pyramidal roof topped with a weathervane. The first-floor windows are arched casements with recessed arched tympana, while the ground floor includes a 19th-century canted bay with a parapet, central French casements, and flanking sash windows. The right-hand wing has a two-storey canted bay, and the left-hand wing features a first-floor casement along with two ground-floor casements.

Inside, the tower has a ground-floor Ionic chimneypiece and a first-floor arcaded Gothic frieze. The tower was likely constructed as a prospect tower on the Tong Estate, showcasing design elements similar to those found in 'Capability' Brown's Gothic Tong Castle and other related buildings nearby. The tower also reflects the design of the tower and spire of the Church of St. Bartholomew at Tong, which is visible from the lodge.
