Description

The Den is a cottage, likely dating from the late 17th or early 18th century. It is timber-framed with red brick infill, with a rendered front and a corrugated iron roof over what was originally thatch. The cottage has a two-cell plan. The right-hand bay is a single storey and open to the roof, while the left-hand bay has a loft. The timber framing consists of irregular square and rectangular panels, with two panels from the cill to the wall-plate, and long curving tension braces. A central boarded door is flanked by two small, late 19th-century windows: a casement to the left and a fixed-light window to the right. An external brick end stack on the right is likely a later addition and now has a mid-19th-century lean-to abutting. The interior consists of two rooms divided by a timber-framed cross wall. The cottage is included on the list as an unaltered example of a labourer's cottage.
