Description
Spencer Lodge is a farmhouse that dates back to the early 17th century, with modifications and extensions made around 1700 and further additions in the mid-19th century. The oldest section is timber-framed with red brick infill, while the later parts are constructed from red brick and uncoursed limestone rubble, all topped with plain tile roofs. The original house is L-shaped, with a two-bay range added to the front around 1700, and a mid-19th century addition of two bays to the left. The original structure has one storey and an attic, while the later sections have two storeys. The framing is exposed on the rear range, featuring wide rectangular panels, four from the cill to the wall-plate, and jowled wall posts.
The front of the building is divided into two distinct sections; the 1700 part on the right has two cross-paned sash windows below the wall plate and one with a segmental head to the right of a pedimented stone doorcase that contains a six-panel door (the top panels are now glazed). There is a wide floor band in the centre and an external end stack. The left section features two glazing-bar sash windows with horns on the first floor and a tripartite sash window in the centre of the ground floor, all with segmental heads, along with an external end stack.
Inside, the front room of the original house has chamfered ceiling beams, while the sitting room of the 1700 addition is adorned with rectangular oak panelling that includes a carved niche on one wall and an inset corner cupboard on another.
