Description

School Bank is a farmhouse that has been divided into two cottages, dating from around 1600 with later additions and alterations. It features a timber frame with plaster infill set on a painted brick plinth and has a machine tile roof. The building is arranged in an L-shape with a gabled cross-wing that projects to the rear and stands two storeys tall.

The timber framing includes small square and rectangular panels, with four panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate, although the front of the main range has been altered. There are occasional quatrefoil decorations and short straight tension braces. The front gable of the cross-wing displays herringbone decoration above the tie beam. The structure includes a collar and tie beam truss with raking and vertical struts, as well as v-struts from the collar to the rear gable. The gables have massive projecting double-purlin ends and 19th-century cusped bargeboards.

The mid-19th-century fenestration consists of three-light cast-iron Gothic casements: one on the ground floor of the main range, one in a gabled half-dormer directly above, and one on each floor of the front gable of the cross-wing. There are entrances on the left and right sides, each featuring boarded doors with bracketed lean-to hoods. A large ridge stack to the right of the main range has been rebuilt in mid-19th-century blue engineering brick with a moulded capping. The interior has not been inspected but is reported to have massive deep-chamfered ceiling beams and heavy joists.
