Description

School Farmhouse is a farmhouse that likely dates from the late 16th century or 17th century, with some remodeling in the mid-19th century and later additions and alterations. The building is roughcast, which probably hides a timber frame, set on a high painted brick and rubblestone plinth. The same rubblestone is also used for the right gable end, back wall, and an extension to the left. The roof is made of machine tiles, with graded slate on the rubblestone addition.

Originally, the house consisted of two or three framed bays, possibly jettied at the front, and it was extended to the left in the 19th century. The farmhouse has two storeys and features two small mid-19th century casement windows to the left of the timber-framed section, with a boarded door in the center. To the left of the door is a mid-19th century three-light casement window, and to the right is a small fixed-light window. There is an integral end stack with a red brick shaft on the right side, and the exposed double-purlin ends can be seen on both gables.

The lower 19th century extension to the left has one casement window on each floor, with the ground floor window featuring a segmental head. An external end stack has a late 19th century red brick shaft and a projecting bread oven attached.

While the interior could not be inspected during the resurvey in December 1985, it was noted to have a massive deep-chamfered cross beam and chamfered joists with stepped ogee stops in the room to the left of the entrance. A straight-flight oak staircase at the rear has a close-studded wall to the left, and several plank and muntin doors with pointed strap hinges are present on the ground floor.
