Description
Malt Cottage is an early 18th-century house and malthouse located in Strefford, Shropshire. The building is constructed of dressed sandstone rubble with plain tile roofs, except for the rear pitch which has been altered and slated. A 20th-century brick stack is present at one end.
The building is arranged in an L-shape. The original part of the house is single-storey and attic, featuring a single-window front with a 20th-century mullion and transom window beneath a stone hood. A 19th-century gabled dormer contains a 20th-century two-light casement window. A stone tablet inscribed "W.B. 1740, M.F.M. 1757" is visible on the front. The entrance is in the left return side, consisting of a 20th-century glazed door and overlight.
A later, three-storey wing was added in the late 18th or early 19th century. This wing features various inserted windows and entrances, three ventilation openings to the second floor, a hoist opening, a plank door, a rubble end stack, and brick panels to the rear.
Inside the original part of the house, there’s a stop-chamfered ceiling beam, an inglenook fireplace, and a graduated flagstone floor. The malthouse area retains a pulley system and trapdoors.
