Description

The barn and attached outbuildings at Rhyse Farm date from around 1771 to 1791. The structures are built from red brick in Flemish bond and feature a hipped slate roof on the barn, while the shelter shed has a gabled roof covered with old plain tiles. The layout is L-shaped, with the barn connected to a shelter shed by an L-shaped wall that includes a lean-to outbuilding.

The exterior of the barn includes a central segmental-arched entry leading to the threshing floor, with a segmental-arched doorway and windows to the right that likely serve the cowhouse and loft floors, which may have been used as a granary. The barn also features cross-shaped ventilation holes, dentilled brick eaves, and a similar threshing-floor doorway at the rear. The front is weatherboarded, and there is a through-entry to the lean-to outbuilding on the left. The 7-bay open-fronted shelter shed is supported by round brick piers at the wall plate and includes a brick manger.

Inside, the barn has a 5-bay double trenched-purlin roof supported by 4 king-post trusses. The shelter shed features a 7-bay single trenched-purlin roof with 6 queen-post trusses. This barn is known as Johnathon Green's Barn, named after the Lord of the Manor of Ashford Hall for whom it was constructed.
