Description
This building, known as 10 The Square and 7 and 8 Market Street, is a house that has been converted into a shop. It is dated 1728, as indicated on the rainwater head. Constructed of brick, it features a hipped plain tiled roof and stands four storeys tall. The elevation facing The Square has a six-window range, while the Market Street side has an eight-window range.
The facade on The Square includes a shop front that is possibly from the early 20th century, featuring a panelled dado, decorative heads on the glazing bars, and moulded console brackets supporting the fascia. Above this, there are twelve-pane sash windows with flat-arched stuccoed heads and moulded sills, along with stuccoed angle quoins and a parapet eaves. The central rainwater head displays a monogram.
The Market Street facade is similar, with a late 20th-century shopfront on the right. The left side has channelled stucco on the ground floor, with a doorway framed by a reeded architrave, a triglyph frieze, and a fanlight. There is also an entrance arch leading to a passage on the left and two boarded windows on the upper right. The rainwater head here also features the date and masks on the brackets. Nos 7 and 8 Market Street were listed on May 30, 1969.
