Description

Ashton Cottage is a row of nine houses, originally probably dating from the 17th century, but heavily remodelled around 1865. They were adapted to serve as railway workers' cottages. The construction is timber frame, rendered externally, with a slate roof. A break in the eaves is visible between numbers 35 and 37, and the dormers are topped with fish-scale slates. The houses are one storey and attic in height, with nine gabled dormers featuring decorated barge boards, finials, and wooden two-light casement windows. Four ridge stacks and a semi-integral end stack are present. The front elevation has nine window bays, featuring wooden two-light casements alternating with four pairs of windows and one boarded door. The doors have pilastered surrounds, friezes, and cornices. Local tradition suggests the cottages were remodelled from earlier buildings to provide accommodation for workers on The Bishop's Castle Railway, which opened in 1865.
