Description

This is a late 17th-century house with alterations from the early 19th century. It is constructed of painted, coursed limestone rubble with internal timber framing and a slate roof, featuring a catslide over an outshut to the rear. Originally a T-shaped building (comparable to number 4, Welsh Street), it is now L-shaped. The house has two storeys and an attic. It has a semi-integral end stack to the right with a brick top stage, and a brick ridge end-stack to the left.

The windows are glazing bar sashes, with sixteen panes in the outer bays. A central half-glazed door is set within a pilastered surround and a triangular pedimented hood. A dormer gable breaks through the eaves in the projecting centre bay, containing a two-light casement window. There is a dovecote in the gabled wing to the rear.

Inside, the roof is a double staggered-purlin design, with double queen-strut trusses and lath and plaster infill panels. A late 17th-century L-shaped staircase has a landing, a closed string, turned balusters, a moulded grip rail, square newel posts, and a bottom newel post with a bulbous finial. The first-floor splat balusters are shaped to resemble twisted balusters, and there is a short staircase to the attic. Original 17th-century fireplaces are also present.

Although the windows were replaced in the early 19th century, the house remains a notably complete example of a late 17th-century building. It extends behind numbers 4 and 6, Welsh Street (listed separately), which also incorporates part of it. A late 19th-century cast iron railed enclosure is present at the front.
