Description
Nos. 4 and 6 Welsh Street are a pair of houses, currently one is a house and the other is a disused shop. They date from the 17th century and have been refaced, with the eaves raised on the left and an extension added to the front on the right in the early to mid-19th century. The buildings are timber framed and faced with coursed limestone rubble and stucco that is lined to resemble ashlar. They have slate roofs, with two ranges on the right, the rear roof being steeper and higher.
The houses are two storeys tall and feature a plinth and deep eaves. There is a brick stack on the ridge to the rear on the right, an integral brick end stack on the left, and another brick stack behind the ridge, off-centre to the left. The framing consists of square panels that are concealed. The front has three windows, which are glazing bar sashes with flush frames. There is a four-panelled door, with the top panels glazed, situated between the first and second windows from the left, and to the right is an early to mid-19th century shop front that includes a six-part shop window extending around the corner, with a half-glazed door to the left that has two flush lower panels, a pilastered surround, and a bracketed hood.
Inside, the dividing wall between Nos. 4 and 6 reveals an exposed square-panelled timber frame. The two houses are designed to appear as a pair and are partially interlocked on the right with the construction of No. 2 Welsh Street.
