Description
Gravelhill is a house that likely dates from the late 17th century. It is constructed of brick and features a hipped plain tiled roof. The building has two storeys and an attic, with a three-window range that was formerly six, and a central entrance hall. The main facade faces the garden and includes a central six-panelled door with an overlight set within a moulded architrave. On either side of the door are tripartite windows that were added in the late 18th century, along with three 12-pane sash windows above. The finely gauged brick heads of earlier windows are still visible. There is a continuous string course between the storeys and pilasters marking the corners. The roof has hipped gabled dormers. The return elevation features a three-window range, most of which are blind. The rear elevation retains its original first-floor fenestration, with six windows that also have finely gauged brick heads. There are tall panelled axial stacks. A lower wing to the east contains the current entrance; its garden front has an ogee gable between pilasters and a Palladian window on the ground floor that has been altered to form French doors. This entrance provides a link to a two-storeyed service wing that projects into the courtyard.
