Description

The cow house, located approximately 10 metres to the north-west of Middle Farmhouse, is a barn that has been converted into a cow house. It likely dates back to the 16th century, with alterations and additions made in the 17th and 19th centuries. The structure features a weatherboarded timber frame built in cruck construction, set on a plinth of red sandstone rubble, with some parts rebuilt in 19th century red sandstone rubble and red brick. The roof is covered with plain tiles and the building consists of three framed bays.

On the north-east front, there are two openings, with the right-hand one being boarded, flanking a 20th-century door that is off-centre to the left. The rear of the building has a 20th-century window and a pair of large boarded doors. Inside, there are two full cruck trusses that include tie-beams, collars (one of which is curved with cruck blades truncated above), and yokes of the Alcock apex-type L1. There is a possible former third cruck truss, which has had its lower parts removed and replaced with a 19th-century tie-beam and raking struts. Additionally, there is a 17th-century collar and tie-beam truss featuring queen struts, v-struts, and a square-panelled cross-wall. It has been suggested that this building may have originally served as a domestic dwelling. The cow house is part of a complete farmstead group that includes a large barn and a farmhouse.
