Description
The cowhouse located at the rear of Tomhill Farmhouse is a building from the 16th or 17th century. It features a cruck frame, constructed from nibble sandstone, and has a stone slate roof. The structure consists of three bays and is a single storey with a loft. There are board doors on both the left and right sides, with stone lintels above them. The central entrance has a board door with a concrete lintel, and a cruck blade is exposed to the right. On the rear of the building, there are remains of a 17th-century mullion window built into the wall.
Inside, there are two well-finished pairs of crucks. The lower tie beams have been removed, while the remaining ties are positioned above a single purlin and feature notched halving. One of the ties includes soffit mortices for infill. The building also has large, scantling windbraces and a saddle apex with a square-set ridge. This cowhouse may represent a cruck-framed house that was replaced in the 17th century by the adjacent farmhouse. To the right, there is a 19th-century cowhouse that is not of special interest.
