Description
Far House is a farmhouse with an attached cowhouse, dating from the late 17th century, with alterations and the cowhouse added in the 18th century. It is built from deeply-coursed, squared gritstone, while the cowhouse is more roughly faced, and has a stone slate roof. The building has an L-shaped plan with a crosswing on the left that projects to the rear, and an outshut at the back of the main range, with the cowhouse attached to the right.
The farmhouse is two storeys high and features three windows on the first floor. The main entrance is a panelled door on the left, set in a bonded ashlar surround with a shaped lintel and cornice. To the right, there is another door in a chamfered quoined surround. Between these doors, there is a three-light mullion window to the left and a similar two-light window to the right, both with square-faced surrounds and wooden casements. On the first floor to the left, there are similar two-light and three-light windows, while to the right, there is a three-light double-chamfered mullion window.
The gable of the crosswing has moulded kneelers and gable copings, along with a shouldered, corniced end stack. The main range features a renewed ashlar ridge stack. At the rear of the crosswing, there are quoins and a blocked two-light double-chamfered window on the ground floor, with a similar glazed three-light window above, complete with a hoodmould. There is also a small, blocked round-headed opening above.
The cowhouse has four board doors on the ground floor, set in chamfered, quoined reveals, with the left door being wider. There are two square openings on the first floor. A barn is attached to the front of the crosswing, but it is not of special interest.
