Description

This is an integrated farm building dating back to approximately 1800, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. Constructed of red brick, it features gabled and hipped Welsh slate roofs with dentilled brick eaves, and stone external steps. The building comprises three ranges forming a U-shaped plan enclosing a yard, or midden, approximately 50 metres across, with the south side slightly shorter.

On the north-facing side towards the yard, there are seven stable doors, mostly with segmental heads. Above, a rounded arch opening leads to the dovecote, flanked to the left by two two-light casement windows, and to the right by a similar window. These are interspersed with five X-shaped breathers. An external stair is located at the left gable. The east range has segment-headed barn doors to the left and a full-height through-passage to the right, with a single door to the left. Diamond breathers are present on the ground floor, and alternating triangular breathers above. The south side features blocked segmental-headed carriage doors and external steps to the right. Above these, there is a two-light casement window and a plank door. The right gable has a large 20th-century opening on the ground floor and a replacement brick section above. The east-facing external side has a through-passage to the left, flanked by three-light windows, with the window to the right being renewed, and a large opening with double doors to the right. Above are four square pitch holes and several X-shaped and diamond breathers. The outer south side has two pairs of central carriage doors, flanked by single doors with overlights. A large three-light casement window is located to the left, with a central cross-mullioned casement and a smaller glazing bar window above.

Inside, the building features chamfered wooden cross beams with joists supporting the floors, and strutted kingpost roofs with single purlins. The dovecote contains brick nesting boxes. A stable was restored in the late 20th century, with stall partitions and cobbles. A cast iron firegrate is located in the stable loft.

The farm buildings are listed due to their size, relative lack of alteration, and the way they complement Pradoe (a Grade II* listed building), alongside associated structures and landscape features including the dairy, brewhouse, pigsties, manure sump, kitchen garden wall, carpenter’s shop and registered landscape, all contributing to their group value.
