Description

Forge Cottages are two cottages and a smithy, likely dating from the 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th century. The buildings feature a timber-frame structure with brick infill and rubble, topped with a 19th-century plain tile roof. There are brick end stacks and additional stacks at the rear. No. 16 includes a front corner stack with a buttressed smithy stack and has a three-unit plan with a wagon shed and passage at the rear.

The cottages are single storey with an attic and have a four-window range. No. 16 has brick and rubble on the ground floor, with timber-frame and brick infill above. It features plank shutters in an altered opening, with a mullion window above. The central 20th-century part-glazed door has a small light above it, and to the right, there is a canted bow with a plain tiled pentice roof and a mullion window with a casement and simple hood. All windows are fitted with metal lattice glazing. The passage has a timber plate above, supported by arched braces and a later central post. The rear of No. 16 includes a single-storey brick wing with an end stack, a 20th-century plank door, altered openings for casements, and a mullion window above. Roof dormers feature two-light lattice glazed casements over an outshut with a catslide roof.

No. 17 has rubble on the ground floor with some brick, and brick above. It features a central 19th-century plank door set in a 20th-century weather-boarded porch, flanked by two-light casements and a small staircase light above. There are two gable dormers with two-light casements. The rear of No. 17 includes a brick stack and a rubble wing with a brick end stack.
