Description

The Priory Gatehouse, part of a Benedictine Priory, dates from the 12th century with an upper storey added in the 17th century. It is constructed of rubble and timber-frame with brick, topped by a 20th-century plain tile roof and a brick composite ridge stack. The gatehouse is two storeys high and features a three-window range. The central window is a canted oriel with a mullion and transom, fitted with metal lattice lights and set beneath a small gable with a simple finial. This is flanked by two 2-light mullion windows, also with metal lattice glazing.

The deep central arch has a drip-course above and is flanked by two plain buttresses. At the rear, there are two 2-light oak mullion windows with metal lattice glazing above a central opening, which is flanked by similar lights, one of which does not have glazing. The central opening features an oak lintel and is bordered by wide buttresses, with restored oak and sandstone mullions under a shouldered drip-course. To the right, there is an early 20th-century plank door with a wide lattice light.

Inside, the central passage has a plastered ceiling and plank doors with strap hinges. The left side has a 2-light mullion window with metal lattice glazing on the ground floor, while the right side has a first-floor section with lath and plaster infill and three 2-light mullions, one of which has a simple hood on consoles. The gatehouse is also adorned with 20th-century barge-boards and spike finials.
