Description
Bromfield War Memorial is a First World War memorial located in a churchyard, built in 1921 and altered after 1945. It is made of limestone and features a cross and ball atop a hexagonal shaft with a plinth, stepped base, and rectangular platform. The memorial faces south-west towards the path leading from the churchyard lych-gate to the north-west door of the church.
At the top of the monument, the pinnacle has a cross with chamfered and splayed arms above a ball. Below this is a moulded cap on the tapered hexagonal shaft. The plinth has straight sides and bears an inscription on the south-west face that reads: "IN MEMORY OF THE MEN OF THIS PARISH WHO GAVE THEIR LIVES TO SAVE THEIR COUNTRY IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1918. AND 1939 – 1945." The base has three steps, and the north-eastern face of the plinth lists the names of the fallen. Additionally, the names of a single fallen serviceman from the Second World War and from the Palestine Civil War of 1947 are inscribed on the risers of two of the steps of the base.
