Description

The Cottage is a farmhouse, dated 1637, with later additions and alterations. It is timber-framed, now rendered and painted in a black and white style, with painted brick additions; the roofs are tiled, featuring crow-stepping to the gable of the hall range. The building follows a T-plan, consisting of a short hall range of baffle-entry type to the right, and a gabled cross-wing to the left. The hall range is one storey and attic, while the cross-wing is two storeys high. The windows are largely from the 19th and 20th centuries, including an early 20th-century casement to the first floor of the cross-wing and a 16-paned sash window below to the left. The hall range has an early 20th-century casement to the ground floor, with a matching gabled eaves dormer directly above. A half-glazed double door is set within a contemporary gabled trellised porch to the front gable of the cross-wing. The bressumer above the porch is slightly jettied and features rosettes, the initials "J.B.E." and the date "1637" carved in raised lettering, along with single-purlin ends. An integral end stack is located to the right of the hall range, while a red brick ridge stack sits centrally on the cross-wing. A 19th-century addition is set back to the left and features a 16-paned sash window on the ground floor and an integral end stack. Single-storey, early to mid-19th-century painted brick outbuildings are attached to the right. Inside, a ground-floor room of the hall range has a chamfered spine beam with stepped and straight-cut stops, and heavy joists. There is a partly infilled inglenook fireplace with a richly moulded lintel, and the remains of an infilled doorway are visible in front of the fireplace to the right.
