Description
The Church of St Anne is a proprietary church built in 1888 by J.L. Randall of Shrewsbury. It is constructed of red brick with ashlar and painted brick dressings, and has machine tile roofs. The church comprises a nave, chancel, a central tower, a north lean-to transept, a west baptistery with adjoining north porch and south vestry. It is designed in a Byzantine Gothic style.
The tower has three stages and a tall pyramidal roof with a modillioned and corbelled eaves cornice. It features three prominent gabled lucarnes with a chimney stack to the east, and three plain lancet windows to the belfry on the north and south sides, with a lean-to transept positioned between stepped buttresses, below five lancet windows on the north side. The buttressed nave has two bays, with two lancet windows to the west bay and three to the east, on the north side. A lean-to baptistery is at the west end, featuring an apsidal projection under a conical roof, a gabled porch, and a vestry attached to the north and south, with a large rose window above. The short chancel has blind north and south walls, and an east window of five Gothic lights, finished with a dentilled eaves cornice.
Inside, the nave has an arch-braced collar beam roof, while the chancel has a panelled roof. At the west end, a stone arcade supported on marble pillars separates the baptistery, which contains a marble font, from the main body of the church. There is an elaborately carved marble pulpit, and in the chancel, a large altar tomb dedicated to Mrs Anne Hawkes (died 1882), the mother of the founder, S.J. Hawkes, rector of the second portion of Pontesbury parish.
