Description

The Church of St John the Evangelist is a church built in 1874 by Rhode Hawkins, with some alterations made in the 20th century. It features a construction of flint cobbles accented with red-brick bands and eaves, as well as ashlar dressings. The roof is covered with interlocking concrete tiles, while the spire is finished with wood shingles. The church has a four-bay nave and a three-stage bell tower located at the north-west corner, along with a lower three-bay chancel and a separately-roofed two-bay south vestry.

Designed in the Early English style, the church includes buttresses with chamfered plinths, ashlar quoins, and offsets. The windows, mostly one-light, are surrounded by quoined ashlar and feature plate tracery; the raised verges are topped with cross finials. On the nave, the north and south sides each have two two-light windows, with one of the south windows converted into a doorway in the late 20th century. The west end has two two-light windows with a quatrefoil above. The tower has a battered base, a west door with a hoodmould and headstops, three-light louvred belfry openings, and a broached spire topped with a weather-vane. The chancel features a five-light east window with a datestone below, while the vestry includes a Caernarvon-arched door and a two-light window in the gable.

Inside, the church has moulded brackets that support scissor-braced roof trusses, which are arch-braced in the chancel and feature iron ties and trenched purlins. The chancel also contains plain sedilia, a piscina, and a tiled floor. An octagonal Gothic-style marble font is present, along with a tessellated memorial for the First World War.
