Description
This is a barn, likely dating from the 14th or 15th century, located to the northeast of Lower Spoad Farmhouse. It has undergone alterations and additions in the mid-to-late 19th century and 20th century. The barn is timber framed and constructed using cruck techniques, featuring a weatherboarded gable end on the east side. The walls have been rebuilt and the eaves raised using coursed limestone rubble and concrete blocks, topped with a roof made of slate and corrugated iron. The structure consists of two framed bays with later lean-to aisles. There are two pairs of large boarded doors on the east side, while the north side has a blank wall. Inside, there are two full cruck trusses, with the eastern truss lacking a tie-beam, and both trusses have collars and an Alcock apex-type B. The barn seamlessly connects to a smaller barn that adjoins Lower Spoad Farmhouse to the north. This barn is designated as grade II* due to its exceptional cruck construction and its significance as part of an important group, particularly in relation to Lower Spoad Farmhouse.
