Description
The War Memorial in Wem, located on the south side of High Street, is a First World War memorial dating from the early 1920s. It is constructed from Portland stone and is designed in the form of a Medieval preaching cross. The memorial has an octagonal plan and features a four-tier stepped base, which supports a crenellated pedestal. On top of this pedestal is a smaller moulded pedestal, leading to a slender tapered octagonal shaft that holds a Latin cross. The cross is intricately carved with a shield, coronet, and foliage. Slate plaques on the main pedestal and stepped base bear the names of those who lost their lives in the First and Second World Wars. This memorial is a notable example of its kind and is prominently situated in the churchyard of the parish Church of St Peter and St Paul, in the town center.
