Description

The Church of St Peter and St Paul is a Grade II* listed building located on High Street. The church features a base of the west tower dating from the 14th century, with upper stages built in the perpendicular style. The nave was constructed between 1809 and 1813, and the chancel was added in 1886. The church is built of ashlar stone and has a large west tower with diagonal buttresses that have set-offs, two-light perpendicular bell openings, battlements, and crocketed pinnacles. The original west window has been blocked, and a smaller window has been inserted.

An unusual west doorway from the early 14th century features four arches with continuous mouldings and dog-leg bends at the base. Statues are placed in niches on both the west and east walls of the tower. The nave, built between 1809 and 1813, has a wide slate hipped roof and gothic corbelled eaves. There are four Decorated style windows in the nave and south side, added in 1840. The chancel, constructed in 1886, has canted angles and an early English east window set under a gable. A vestry is located at the angle between the tower and nave, featuring a gothic ogee arched doorway and cast-iron windows.

Inside, the nave is galleried on three sides supported by iron columns, and the chancel has a vaulted ceiling. The pulpit and communion rail, made of wrought iron and brass, are dated 1887.

The churchyard, situated to the south of the church, contains numerous 18th-century and early 19th-century headstones, as well as early to mid-19th-century tomb chests.
