Description

The cowhouse, located approximately 50 meters north-west of Stowe Farmhouse, is likely from the late 17th century and incorporates several earlier timber elements. It is constructed from roughly coursed limestone rubble, with weatherboarding below the eaves on the south side and a steeply pitched corrugated iron roof. The building has two levels and features four doorways on the ground floor, along with an eaves hatch at the center of the south side.

Inside, the roof is organized into four bays. The south side includes short wall posts that rise from a high stone plinth, supporting the tie beams of two central trusses. The left truss has curved principal rafters, while the right truss features a curved principal rafter at the rear and a reused 15th-century cruck blade at the front. This cruck blade is chamfered and has mortices and peg-holes for arch-bracing, collars, and a yoke at the apex. It likely forms part of a jointed or upper cruck, as a tenon is visible at the bottom, which does not fit with the existing joint to the tie beam. There are also slots for double through-purlins and evidence of heavy smoke blackening. The curved principals similarly have mortices for former collars, slots for double through-purlins, and traces of smoke blackening. A late 20th-century truss is present at the left gable end, while the right end is made of rubble stone and features triangular air vents. The cruck blade and curved principals may originate from an earlier structure that once stood on the site of Stowe Farmhouse.
