Description

STOWE C.P. STOWE SO 37 SW 11/177 Cowhouse approx. 50 m - north-west of Stowe - Farmhouse II

Cowhouse. Probably late C17, reusing several earlier timbers. Roughly coursed limestone rubble with weatherboarding below eaves on south side; steep- pitched corrugated iron roof. 2 levels; 4 doorways to ground floor and eaves hatch to centre on south. Interior. Roof in 4 bays. South side has short wall posts rising from high stone plinth supporting tie beams of 2 centre trusses, left of which has curved principal rafters and right of which has curved principal rafter to rear and reused C15 cruck blade to front. This is chamfered with mortices and peg-holes for arch-bracing, collars and yoke to apex. Probably part of a jointed or upper cruck as has tenon visible to bottom, obviously not intended to fit existing joint with tie beam;slots for double through-purlins and heavy smoke blackening. Curved principals also have mortices for former collars, slots for double through-purlins and traces of smoke blackening. Late C20 truss to left gable end and rubble- stone to right with triangular air vents. The cruck blade and the curved principals may come from an earlier house on the site of Stowe Farmhouse (not included in this list).
