Description

The grotto, located at SJ 7756 0290, is a cave likely created in the late 18th century or early 19th century, though its exact date is uncertain. It has been hollowed out of rock in the side of a disused quarry and is accessed through a very small, unmarked entrance. The grotto features an apparently irregular layout with ambulatories that open into inner sanctuaries. The columns, left intact during excavation, are cylindrical and include bases, capitals, and occasional annulets. Neo-Norman decoration is present in the bays between the columns, including one neo-Norman doorway adorned with beak-heads and roll moulding, along with various decorative quatrefoils and designs throughout.
