Description
No. 53 Broad Street is a house dating from the early 17th century, with a 15th-century rear range. It features a timber-frame and plaster construction, topped with a Welsh slate roof that has a raised front pitch, and includes brick stacks at the rear. The building stands three storeys high with a cellar and has a three-window range. The central window is a two-light cross window, flanked by three-light windows with mullions and transoms, all featuring leaded glazing and casements, set within close studding. A moulded bressummer rests on consoles above the windows. The front pitch appears to have been raised in the 18th or 19th century, as indicated by the similar window style in chevron-braced box framing, which sits over a moulded plate with light studding. The ground floor has a central plank door within a 20th-century doorcase, flanked by two mullion and transom casements, all under a moulded bressummer supported by enriched consoles. A 20th-century brick plinth is present, and the left gable is stuccoed. The interior reportedly includes a two-bay open hall in the rear range, featuring an open arched-braced truss.
