Description
The former mill and its adjoining ancillary buildings at Hem Farm, dating from around 1829, are now used as an agricultural store. Constructed of red brick, the main structure features dropped hipped roofs and consists of a central three-storey block flanked by one- and two-storey wings.
On the south front, the central block has two first-floor two-light casement windows, a segmental-headed boarded window to the right, and a segmental-headed boarded door to the left. The ground floor has two segmental-headed boarded windows to the right and a segmental-headed boarded door to the left. The two-storey wings have bricks omitted for ventilation; the left wing includes a boarded door and a 20th-century ground-floor door, while the right wing features a first-floor louvred window and two segmental-headed boarded doors on the ground floor. The lower one-storey wings have segmental-headed casements and two-leaf boarded doors.
On the north front, the central block has two second-floor two-light casement windows, two first-floor two-light segmental-headed casement windows, and a ground-floor segmental-headed boarded door to the left. Attached to the south side is a cast-iron high breast-type waterwheel, approximately 4 feet wide and 16 feet in diameter, featuring eight spokes and a gabled canopy supported by brick piers, a king-post truss, and a tiled roof.
Inside, the central block has queen-post trusses, while the two-storey wings have king-post trusses. A complete set of mill fittings remains, including second-floor grain bins, millstones, and some shafting. A mill pond is located to the southwest. The mill was part of a planned farm complex and was used for agricultural purposes, specifically for grinding feed 'nuts' and cutting chaff just before it ceased operations.
