Description

Shote Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse located in Hopton Wafers. It features a painted timber frame with brick infill panels, primarily intact on the first floor, and is underbuilt with brick, with part of the original stone rubble plinth still visible. The roof is covered with plain tiles. The building has a T-shaped plan consisting of a 2-bay main range aligned from south-west to north-east and a 2-bay cross wing.

The exterior is two stories tall with a cellar. The main range showcases square framing on the first floor, with straight tension braces in each bay on the sides and the left (north-east) gable end, which has been remodelled. The right-hand gable end has been rebuilt in rubble stone and is partly covered by a projecting stack. It features an end truss with a straight tie beam, twin vertical struts, and a collar supporting a twin trenched-purlin roof. The windows are a mix of 20th-century restored 2-light and single casements.

On the cross-wing, the south-west side has square framing on the first floor, with tension braces in the right-hand bay and a 2-light casement in the left-hand bay. There is a panelled door sheltered by a projecting hipped tiled porch to the left, along with a 3-light casement in the centre at ground level. The gable end and the north-east side have been rebuilt in brick, featuring first-floor casements, a ground-floor gable-end bay window, and a weatherboarded end truss. The interior has not been inspected.
