Description
The Hole in the Wall Public House is a purpose-built public house dating from 1863. It features mock-timber framing with brick nogging on the ground floor and plasterwork above, all topped with a plain tiled roof. The building has four storeys and a single-window range. The ground floor is recessed and includes a central canted bay flanked by two doorways. Above this, there is a cornice decorated with rosettes, followed by an oriel bay that has bull's eye glass and moulded mullions. The decorative plasterwork includes the date and painted roses. Above this is a mullioned window, and the attic features a jettied gable with another mullioned window and quatrefoil panelling. The barge-boards are adorned with vine scroll decoration. This main block is internally connected to another building on Drayton Passage, which shares the ground floor and cellars with the Hole in the Wall. The external walls are made of substantial stone, and there is a vaulted cellar inside.
