Description
The Heighway Memorial is a chest tomb located approximately 16 meters south of the tower of the Church of St George in Pontesbury. This early 19th-century memorial is made of limestone ashlar and has a rectangular shape. It features a moulded plinth and capping with a chamfered top ledger, along with reeded corner pilasters.
On the east side, there is a recessed semi-circular inscription panel that commemorates William Heighway, who died in 1809, and his wife, Jane, who died in 1820. The west side has another inscription panel dedicated to Jane James, who died in 1805. There are also two oval inscription panels on the short sides, which were indecipherable at the time of re-survey in 1984. Additionally, various further inscriptions to members of the Heighway family can be found on the top ledger.
