Description

The Plough Inn and Garage is a house that has been converted into an inn and garage offices. It likely dates from the 15th century and was extended in the early 17th century, with further additions and alterations mainly in the early 19th century and mid-20th century. The building features a timber frame, partly constructed using cruck techniques, and brick, which is now mostly covered in roughcast. It has a plain tile roof.

The open hall consists of two unequal bays aligned from northeast to southwest and was extended in the early 17th century by adding a box-framed bay to the northeast. Two brick-built bays were added to the southwest, and the eaves of the entire structure were raised in the early 19th century. The building is two storeys high and has a dentilled eaves cornice. The framing is exposed in the 17th-century addition, showing three square panels from the cill to the wall-plate with V-struts from the collar. The windows are irregularly arranged, featuring six 20th-century casements below the eaves, one small fixed-light window to the right, and five late 19th-century and 20th-century casements on the ground floor. There are entrances through 20th-century doors on the left and right sides, with a prominent ridge stack located roughly in the center and an end stack to the left.

Inside, parts of three true cruck trusses with tie beams and collars remain, with the central truss being the best preserved, although all apexes have been destroyed. There is a later timber-framed cross-wall on the ground floor beneath the central truss.
