Description

No. 53 on Shropshire Street is a house that has been converted into a shop. It is dated 1518 but is likely from the 17th century and was partly rebuilt in the mid-18th century. The building features a timber frame, with some areas rebuilt in painted brick, and has an exposed wall plate at the front. It has a plain tile roof and consists of one framed bay, with one storey and an attic. The structure includes a plinth and a plat band.

There is a central gabled eaves dormer from the 17th century, which is timber framed and features a 20th-century three-light wooden casement. The gable above is probably jettied and is now rendered. Brick ridge stacks are located on the left and right, and there is an external brick end stack at the rear. The ground floor has a 4-pane sash window on the right with a painted stone cill and lintel. To the left is a mid-to-late shop front that includes a plate-glass window on the right and a glazed door on the left with a rectangular overlight.

There is also a likely late 17th or 18th-century covered carriageway to the right, which is timber framed with plastered infill panels. At the rear, there is a wing. Inside, the building has a timber-framed square-panelled rear wall with two panels extending from the sole plate to the wall plate. One of the rails is dated 1518, and there is a tie-beam truss in the right-hand gable end.
