Description
No. 30 on Shropshire Street is an early 19th-century house built of red brick with some sandstone ashlar dressings. It features a plain tile roof and has an L-plan layout. The building stands two storeys high with a gable-lit attic over a basement. Notable architectural details include a plinth, a painted stone plat band, a dentil brick eaves cornice, a central triangular pediment with a painted sandstone frieze and cornice, and parapeted gable ends with chamfered grey sandstone copings and moulded kneelers. There is an integral brick end stack on the right and a stack behind the ridge, which is off-centre to the left. The façade is divided into three bays, with a central break; it features glazing bar sashes, which are tripartite in the outer bays, all with painted stone cills and lintels. The basement has a pair of windows with red sandstone lintels. The central door has six raised and fielded panels, an impost band, a radial fanlight, and a doorcase with panelled pilaster strips and a triangular pediment. Access to the door is via four stone steps, flanked by cast-iron spearhead railings that end in square standards with urn finials. There is evidence of a former fire insurance plate above the central first-floor window. At the rear, there is a wing with integral lateral brick stacks. The interior has not been inspected.
