Description

Spring Cottage is a house, originally two houses, dating from the 18th and 19th centuries, situated on St John’s Road in Ludlow. The building is constructed of painted brick and stone rubble with old plain tile roofing. It has a rendered axial ridge stack and a rear stack that has been partly demolished. The layout is L-shaped. The two-storey, two-window front features 20th-century 2-light casement windows. The right-hand entrance has a 20th-century plank door with a simple hood. To the left of the door is a 19th-century light with a casement; to the extreme left, a 19th-century battened plank door leading to a rear passage, all set under brick segmental arches. The right-returned side displays 18th-century brickwork with 19th-century brickwork above. The passage ceiling has 19th-century joists. The rear elevation is of stone rubble with brickwork over, primarily containing 20th-century windows, although some earlier overlights remain. A gable wing is constructed of stone rubble. Internally, the house features exposed ceiling beams including a softwood purlin, a 19th-century staircase, exposed lintels and stone steps.
