Description
The L-shaped barn and stables at Pentre'r-gaer-henblas date from the late 17th century or early 18th century, with later additions and alterations. The structure is timber framed, featuring horizontal plank infill on the east side and weatherboarding on the west. It has a high uncoursed limestone rubble plinth and stone gable ends, with the southern gable displaying crow-stepping and a slate roof.
The building is arranged in an L-plan, with the barn or cowhouse along the west side of the farmyard and a shorter stone range for stables at right angles to the north. There are various 19th-century doors and openings on both sides that provide access to the cowhouse accommodation beneath the barn, along with a heightened cart entrance located in the third bay from the south. The framing consists of three square panels extending from the cill to the wall-plate.
Inside, the barn features a queen strut roof spanning six bays, with the bays closer together towards the south. This roof includes straight windbraces, butt purlins, and v-struts from the collars, along with long straight tension braces supporting the framed partitions. There is a raised threshing floor in the second bay from the north and 19th-century cowstalls in the basement animal accommodation to the south.
