Description
The Church of St Peter is a parish church located in Diddlebury, originally dating back to the Saxon period and restored in the 19th century. It is constructed from dressed and rubble sandstone with plain tile roofs and features a nave, chancel, west tower, south aisle, and north transept.
The exterior includes long and short quoins at the base of the chancel, a decorated east window, and a mid-19th century south wall and porch. The restored tower has a Norman superstructure above an infilled Saxon arch and is topped with a weather-vane. There is a tall, narrow north doorway that has been blocked in the 19th century, featuring a semi-circular arch on chamfered impost blocks.
Inside, the church displays good herringbone masonry on the north wall, along with fragments of interlacing sculpture and a piscina. There are two canopies adorned with ballflower ornament, a font, and several tablets commemorating individuals such as Cornwall (died 1756), Powell (died 1769), Fleming (died 1650 and 1761), and Bawdewyn (died 1674). The interior also features some early wooden figure-head corbels supporting the roof and several funeral hatchments.
