Description
Marsh Brook Signal Box is a Grade II listed building constructed in Flemish bond brick with stone dressings and a Welsh slate roof. It is a rectangular structure designed as a LNWR/GWR Type 1 box and consists of two storeys.
The exterior features a stone string course that separates the first-floor operating room from the locking room below. The operating room has continuous glazing on the south-west (trackside) elevation and the front half of the returns, with all window openings framed in stone. The trackside windows are divided into three sections by stone mullions, featuring a central casement window with three-over-three lights, flanked by horizontal sliding sashes with eight lights. The left-hand return has a horizontal sliding sash with twelve lights, while the right-hand return includes a horizontal sliding sash with two large lights next to a half-glazed door, both of which are early 21st-century uPVC replacements. Access to the operating floor is via a short flight of wooden steps. The south-west elevation of the locking room has two segmental-headed windows with cross casements, and an identical window is found in the left-hand return. The right-hand return contains a segmental-headed doorway. Above the string course, just below the operating room windows, is a name board from the Shrewsbury and Hereford Joint Railway that reads 'MARSH BROOK'.
Inside, the signal box retains a lever frame with 18 levers, likely installed in the late 19th century.
