Description
Berwick Signal Box is a two-storey structure built with a combination of materials. The locking room and rear wall of the operations room, along with the chimney, are made of brown brick in Flemish bond. The other three sides of the operations room are timber-framed and feature replacement uPVC double glazing, while the original overlights remain. The building has a hipped slate roof with overhanging eaves supported by curved timber brackets.
The exterior includes a low locking room with two round-arched openings facing the track, which are now bricked up. There is a square-headed entrance with the original door on the north-east elevation. Access to the operations room is via a timber staircase and landing at the north-west end, which leads to an original glazed entrance door. The original timber four-pane sliding sash windows have been replaced with uPVC double glazing, and a door to a modern timber extension platform, which contains a timber-boarded WC, has been added to the north-east elevation. The curved-ended overlights are still present, and the timber brackets supporting the eaves feature distinctive cuboid stops. A modern wooden sign displays the name of the station.
Inside, the signal box retains the original Saxby and Farmer 17-lever frame, although some levers have been cut short. The block shelf is intact and contains a mix of 19th and 20th-century equipment, including a Southern Railway circuit diagram, block instruments, and indicators. A 20th-century suspended ceiling has been installed, and the fireplace has been blocked up. The locking room still has the interlocking section of the frame and features Southern Railway electrical relays by Tyer and Co arranged around the walls, some of which likely date from the first half of the 20th century.
