Description

The Stackhouse Acton Memorial is located at the Church of St Margaret in Acton Scott. This memorial consists of a group of two raised gabled tombs set within a railed enclosure. The tombs are made of ashlar, featuring solid slabs with sloping sides, gabled ends, and raised ridge rolls. One side of the tomb is inscribed. The railings surrounding the tombs are made of cast iron, with double moulded upper rails and spear-head finials on square plan standards, along with octagonal main standards topped with pineapple finials.

The northern tomb commemorates Frances Stackhouse Acton, who died in 1791, while the southern tomb is dedicated to Thomas Pendarves Stackhouse Acton, who died in 1835. The Acton family were lords of the manor, and in 1773, Susanna, the daughter of Sir Edward Acton, married John Stackhouse, a botanist, which brought the Stackhouse name into the family. John Stackhouse, who died in 1819, was the Lord of Acton Scott and left £500 for a family pew, which was built as a north transept chapel in 1820. After his widow's death, the estate was inherited by their younger son, Thomas Pendarves Stackhouse, who also took on the name Acton and died in 1835.

The north transept chapel, designed in Gothick style, contains memorials to the Stackhouse Acton family and resembles the Acton family chapel at Acton Round, which dates from around 1760 and was likely designed by Thomas Farnolls Pritchard. This enclosure was constructed to contain family churchyard monuments and forms a group with the Church of St Margaret, Acton Scott.
