Description
Hatton Cottage is a farmhouse, later used as a parish workhouse, an inn (the Blue Bell), and ultimately divided into two houses before being reunited as a single residence. It dates to 1679. The building is constructed of stone rubble with a prominent plinth and has plain-tile roofs. The layout is in a T-shape.
The exterior presents two storeys and an attic. The windows are modern wood casements, but they are fitted with stepped ashlar hoodmoulds above each gable end on both storeys, and stepped gables are present in the attic. A brick eaves stack is integrated into the rear wall. The street front is symmetrical, with a central gable flanked by gabled wings. A modern boarded door is set in the original opening on the right return side of the gable, above which is an inscribed stone reading "H.V.E. 1679", indicating the builders, Vincent and Eleanor Hammond. A lean-to extension covers the rear wall. The interior was not inspected during the listing process.
