Description

Bircher Cottage is a house dating back to around 1500, with later additions in 1927 and 1983. The construction is a timber frame with painted infill panels, along with painted stone rubble, roughcast, and render on the 20th-century extensions. The roof is slate and plain tile, featuring an integral stone gable-end stack with a brick shaft. The house has a rectangular plan, originally comprising two framed bays, one of which is a cross wing. This is extended on both sides by larger 20th-century additions.

The front of the house, set back from the street, includes a single bay with square framing in three panels, featuring a ground-floor casement window. A later stone stack, incorporating a probable bread oven, is on the left return gable. To the right is a projecting 1927 extension.

The rear elevation has a framed gabled bay with square framing, featuring a tie beam with vertical struts, a collar, and twin raking struts. It includes three glazed ground-floor panels and a 2-light metal casement window above the tie beam. A projecting extension from around 1983 covers the right-hand bay. The left return side has square framing in three panels with two glazed ground-floor panels.

Inside, the house features a full cruck central truss with cruck spurs, along with ogee stop chamfered bridging beams.
