Description
Detton Mill House is a miller's house dating from the early 17th century, with alterations made in the 19th and 20th centuries. The building features a timber frame with rendered infill panels and a tiled roof, supported by two brick stacks. It has two storeys and an attic, consisting of a one-bay range, possibly a truncated hall, and a slightly later two-bay cross range. The south and west walls display square panel framing with tension braces in the cross wing. The north gable wall of the hall range and the eastern extension were built in the 19th century using brick. The chimney stack at the east gable end of the cross range has been rebuilt with double star plan shafts linked by offset capping.
The west gable wall of the cross range features a first-floor jetty with a moulded bressumer, supported by upper corner posts on 20th-century carved brackets that replaced the originals. Below the bressumer is a timber canted oriel window with five lights, resting on a richly moulded late 16th-century sill that has been salvaged from another building, supported by two carved brackets. There is a three-light casement window on the first floor above and a two-light casement in the gable. All timber casements are from the 20th century and include leadlights. Inside, several walls on both floors are adorned with early 17th-century panelling, featuring carved frieze panels that are said to have originated from Detton Hall.
