Description

Mill House is a mill house dating from the late 15th century or early 16th century, with early 17th century and later alterations. It is timber framed and rendered, with a 20th-century brick plinth and plaintile roofs. The building consists of mainly two sections. The left section has two bays and two storeys with a jetty, featuring some exposed frame, a moulded bressumer with pierced decoration, and replaced ground floor studs. There are two 2-light 20th-century casements on each floor. The right section also has two bays and two storeys, with two similar 3-light casements and two 2-light full dormer casements. A 20th-century boarded door is located in the left-hand corner beneath a large brick stack.

Inside, the left-hand frame is exposed, showcasing long halved bracing. The axial beam and some transverse beams and joists have double ogee moulding with run-out stops. There is a rear window opening with shutter grooves, and some first-floor windows are blocked but also have shutter grooves. The interior features a moulded cornice and a fireplace bressumer. The crown post roof includes a square post and longitudinal braces. The left stack of early brick is intact, while the right stack has been partly rebuilt. The right-hand first cell has a thinner frame with broach stops to the chamfered beams. Over the fireplace, there are apparently reused spandrels from an ogival-headed doorway, with one spandrel depicting a half-female, half-angel figure playing an instrument, and the other showing a cat playing pipes and a drum, each surrounded by decorative motifs. The end cell has been largely rebuilt.
