Description

Springfield is a miller's house built in the early 18th century and remodeled in the early 19th century. The building is timber-framed and rendered, with some areas covered in painted brick. It features a plain tile roof, with the lower courses and verges made of gault tiles, and a Welsh slate roof on the rear outshuts. The house has three bays and includes end and off-centre ridge stacks, with a later stack added to the north gable end. The original lobby entry has been converted into a central entrance that leads directly into a room. There are lean-to additions at the rear, built in two stages. A 19th to early 20th century arched iron porch with corrugated cladding and modern glazed doors leads to a six-panel door. The ground floor has 16-pane sash windows under segment arches, while the first floor features 12-pane sash windows in flush architraves, along with one three-light casement window on the left end. Attached to the right is a single-storey range. The rear elevation includes two early 18th century three-light casements with leaded lights and original ironwork on the first floor.

Inside, Springfield is an unusually well-preserved example of an 18th century country interior, particularly on the ground floor. It has a chamfered spine beam with tongue stops, and the central room is paved with gault pamments and brick. There is a skirting board and dado rail, along with a large arched timber fireplace featuring a mantel shelf. To the left, there is a cupboard with HL hinges, and a half-glazed door leads to the parlour. The stairs and other rooms have vertically boarded doors with long hinges. The parlour, located to the right, has a 19th century brown veined marble fireplace on the end wall; the original fireplace is blocked, and there are a pair of cupboards to the right. The floor is made of gault pamments and brick. The end room to the left has a dado rail, a boxed-in spine seam, and a timber fireplace with brackets supporting the mantel shelf. The first floor room above the parlour features a small timber fireplace with paired brackets and reeded pilasters, along with a timber window seat. The windmill that once stood above the house has been demolished.
