Description
The lych gate to the east of the Church of St John the Evangelist was built in 1880. It is constructed from a mix of roughly-hewn coursed limestone and timber framing, topped with slate roofs and featuring wrought iron details.
The structure is situated at the eastern edge of the churchyard and has a rectangular shape that allows pedestrian access from east to west. The outer elevation faces east and presents a symmetrical design with a timber-framed entrance passage, flanked by masonry outshuts. Wide timber posts rise from a low stone plinth and feature decorative brackets at the corners with trefoil piercings. The crossbeam includes a relief inscription reading ‘1880’ in a stylised font. The roof is half hipped with sprocketted eaves, and the gablets are clad in timber, also displaying the trefoil motif. A metal cross adorned with decorative scrollwork is positioned at the ridge. The west elevation, which faces the churchyard, mirrors the east side but includes ledge and plank doors leading into the former bier house and tool shed within the outshuts.
